Discussion PSA: Scams and requests for donations

Hello everyone,

This past week the mod team has removed two posts from users who were asking for donations from our userbase and banned the posters.

In both cases the evidence we uncovered that the story they posted to the subreddit was false was incontroversial.

In both cases the scammer avoided initial moderation by only adding a request for money after their initial post was approved and gained traction, in one case adding a PayPal link to their reddit userpage and in the other sending people a link to a GoFundMe.

The mod team does what it can to take down these posts, ban the scammer and report them to reddit as soon as we are aware something untoward is happening but it is not possible to pre-emptively moderate against people altering their reddit bio or editing their post for malicious reasons. A post like that will remain visible on the page until we catch them, sometimes for several hours.

We take this abuse of our subscribers very seriously. r/Cats is a subreddit that has a wonderful, caring community and this preying on your good nature is cynical and unacceptable.

We would like to request two things from you:

1 Never send money to a redditor based on a post you see on this subreddit. r/Cats does not allow fundraising of any kind.

Please be sceptical of users who talk about not being able to afford something for their pet. While it is of course possible that someone posts in good faith about a tragic situation and while of course you shouldn't immediately accuse a poster of something, being aware that it can happen that people ask for money in sometimes surreptitious ways can both prevent you losing your money to someone abusing your kindness as well as make this subreddit unattractive to scammers.

2 Please report a post and send us a modmail if you have doubts about the veracity of a claim involving money.

The mod team looks over the subreddit often to see if posts follow the rules but we are not able to be present on the page every minute of the day. In one of the cases described above the OP posted, then waited an hour until the post got attention and only then edited in how "grateful they'd be for donations" so as to effectively try to circumvent content moderation. It was due to the alertness of our users who reported this that we were able to catch them relatively quickly, but still we are aware that some people had already pledged to their scam GoFundMe campaign.

I am taking this opportunity to both thank our fantastic userbase not only for their caring nature but also for being on the lookout for each other as well as thanking our dedicated content moderators for quickly responding to reports of abuse. It is thanks to your genuine care and alertness that we have been able to nip these attempts in the bud.

Please remember to maintain the balance between empathy for a poster and healthy scepticism of claims made. It definitely isn't necessary to think every post is a scam. After all, two posts out of hundreds this month isn't a whole lot. But it is two posts too many so if you have any doubts, please report + modmail. Only comment that something may be fishy in the thread if there is direct evidence, like a poster talking about fundraising or having a fundraising link in their bio.

We'd like to keep this place welcoming and hale while at the same time doing everything we can to make sure your care and kindness isn't abused.

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and from the entire mod team of r/Cats, thank you for making this space the best cat related community on reddit.

Mourning/Loss My boyfriend and I just lost our baby girl Tigger

Both my boyfriend and I were at work last Saturday. We live with two other roommates who were both home at the time. One of our roommates decided to leave their sewing kit on the ground, open...while she went to take a nap. Our baby girl who just reached a year old got into it, and ended up swallowing a piece of string. Fast forward to Monday, she had stopped eating, drinking, and wanted to do nothing but hide. She began to vomit and started to become severely lethargic. We took her to the vet and explained what happened. My boyfriend pointed out that it seemed like something was stuck in her mouth since she kept doing weird things with her tongue. The vet took x-rays and they tried to look in her mouth but Tigger wasn't a fan so they gave up. They said there was nothing on the x-rays, but yet they refused to show the x-rays to us. They sent us home saying it was just a tummy bug. Thursday arrived and she got even worse. We took her back to the vet, where they did another x-ray. they saw the string from the x-rays and found out the string attached to her tongue, which was causing all of the issues of not being able to eat or drink. They kept her for the night into Friday. They gave her fluids and were able to cut the string after sedating her. They called us in yesterday to come see her and talk about surgery, since she wasn't able to pass the string herself. We agreed which leads us to now. We got everything ready for her. We were so excited to see her again after the sedation wore off. But instead we got a phone call...telling us that we needed to get to the vet as soon as possible, she was dying. We rushed over as quickly as possible, but we arrived too late...both my boyfriend and I held her, crying and petting her...needless to saywe arent returning to that vet (we found out that the first round of X-rays did show the string but they chose to ignore it and not let us see.) And we both are looking for new housing arrangements. We miss you baby girl. I'm so so sorry..so sorry. R.I.P Tigger 🕊

Wife and I usually have to tag team the claw trimming. She holds while I cut. Today I decided to see if she’d let me do it myself. She clearly thought murderous things the whole time, but didn’t really fuss at all. Am pleasantly surprised!

(And of course she got treats after)

+++VET APPT IN 3 HOURS+++

my 6month old, male, cat has had odd breathing sounds here and there for the past 2 months, we been at the vet several times and he always got antibiotics as treatment.

Now this has happened. He was laying on his back and then suddenly turned around and had this cough attack?! Then after a total of a minute it stopped and two minutes later he had another one for a minute.

Has anyone ever had this happen??

We have an appointment in 3 hours, including xrays.

I (20, female) used to go to my grandparents house every single weekend between the ages of 6-14. I’d go over on Friday after school and come home Sunday evening so my mum could work weekends. So I spent a lot of time there, and it’s honestly my happiest memories from childhood.

When I was around 8, my grandparents neighbour passed away and some new neighbours moved in. They had a lot of pets, including 5 dogs, 4 cats, 2 rabbits and fish. They weren’t the best pet owners and the cats would just roam around outside and often went hungry. My grandparents started secretly leaving food out for them, which slowly developed into them feeding them twice daily.

As I spent so much time at my grandparents, and I was a child so I spent most days in the garden playing, I quickly developed a bond with these cats: Peggy, a black and white longhaired cat who was naturally SUPER friendly. Carly, a light-ginger who was super shy and always ran away from everyone. Mitzi, a beautiful tortishell who was the same as Carly in the beginning but eventually warmed up to us. And Junior, a beautiful ginger and white boy who was immediately my favourite.

Me and Junior became Best Friends. I wish I had more memories with him, but I was only 8/9 so unfortunately I only have one clear memory. My grandparents owned a small trampoline for the grandchildren, and I so clearly remember sitting on the trampoline with Junior, chatting to him, and jumping on it while he sat and watched. While I don’t remember any other specifics, I remember Junior used to follow me EVERYWHERE. I would play in the garden all day and Junior would stay with me all the time. He always watched me, played with me, followed me when I was on my scooter. He genuinely adored me as much as I adored him. He felt like my cat. And everyone knew he was mine.

Unfortunately, just a year or so after this, Junior was struggling to eat and I remember my grandparents telling me they had to put him to sleep. Still to this day, I don’t know exactly what happened to him. I assume he had mouth cancer or something similar - It must’ve been something severe because he wasn’t a very old cat. I’ll never know how old he was, but I’d assume somewhere between 3-7 years old. I was devastated. And confused, I was so young, I barely knew what “death” was. I just knew I’d lost my Best Friend.

Even though we spent such little time together, I’ve never stopped missing him. The older I got, the more I wished I could see him again. The more I wished I could sit with him one more time. The more I wished I at least had a photo of him. The older I got, the harder it was to remember what he looked like. And that hurt the most.

One evening, me and my long distance best friend were on Skype. I was around 16 at the time. We were talking about life, our upbringings, having a deep conversation about childhood. I decided to go on Google Maps, just to show him my Grandparents house and the area, as it was in the countryside in England, which is very different to what he grew up with. I got on the street my Grandparents house is, and we admired the nearby fields and other houses. Then, I moved onto my Grandparents house and immediately was starstruck at the little cat sitting in the driveway.

I couldn’t even speak. I just burst into tears. Of shock, of happiness, of grief. My friend had no idea why I was suddenly hysterical. It took me a good few minutes to compose myself. Through tears, I explained that Junior, the cat I had been grieving for 8 years, the cat I had cried over wanting to see again… Was in front of me.

Genuinely, it’s one of the happiest moments of my life. It still shocks me to this day, almost 5 years later. He was right there, the whole time. Sitting in the driveway, almost like he was waiting for me to come back. Is it silly if I believe he was waiting for me? Because a part of me really does.

My soul cat. He truly was my soul cat. We spent such little time together Junior, and I still think of you all the time. I wish we had more time together. I got my first Tablet when I was 10, if he had just lived a little longer, I’d have no end of pictures of him. But I don’t care. I’ve got one. I got to see my favourite boy and I couldn’t ever ask for anything more. I love you, Junior. Rest easy Buddy.

We got him as a kitten very malnourished and rather ratty looking from our local humane society. As he got healthier and grew we realized we somehow got a bluepoint ragdoll (if anyone disagrees let me know were not exactly sure what he is but from a cursory google thats what we came up with). His name is Jelly.
