"I don't like cats, we're not getting one." Famous last words before getting a cat’
Famous words the humans say:
‘I DON’T LIKE CATS! No How ~ NO WAY!!’
’I’ll NEVER have one as a PET!
NO CAT FOR ME! I’ll NEVER GET!!’
we feel their pain, these ones ‘so sure’
(we know that We’re their Only cure)
it starts with just a little glance,
(we know they watch, n that’s our chance…)
a distance kept, our target found,
we mew n s t r e t c h, n circle ‘round . . .
their glance turns into longer stare,
it’s time to climb upon their chair
perhaps the back - a shoulder tap,
some time may pass,
n then
the lap…
a gentle biscuit on their legs
(they’re getting soft… their heart it Begs)
a quiet purrrrrr they’ve never felt -
that’s when their heart
begins to melt
you have a Cat, n it is Me ;}
n now
my Human
You will be
♥️

The problem isn't that dads like this "don't want a cat."
It's that they don't want to bury one of their children.

Haha that’s my spouse!
When I went to the shelter to adopt our kittens, he was a bit skeptical about two cats (we previously had only one who aged and passed away). He actually wanted a dog if he had every choice in the world (but knew that’s not feasible), and he said he’d prefer a male cat and not a black cat.
Guess who is his little black furry princess now and has him totally wrapped around his finger?

u/Kaiya_Mya 12d ago edited 12d ago
It's because, ironically, they end up acting in a way that make them more appealing to the cat. Most people who don't like cats end up giving them a wide berth, avoiding their gaze and leaving them alone, which actually means they're inadvertently respecting the cat's space and allowing them to make the first move.
By trying to keep their distance, they're actually speaking the cat's language.

u/ZookeepergameSad5516 12d ago
You don't get to decide if you're a cat person or not. Cats will do that for you.

When my then boyfriend/now husband and I moved in together:
Me: Let's get a dog.
BF: Dogs need more attention and we both work a lot. How about a cat? One of my coworker's cats just had kittens.
Almost 30 years later, house is full of cat toys, cat beds and cat climbing trees. I spoil our 3 cats more than my husband does. We have had one dog. We had him for 13 years and are planning on getting another one maybe in the Spring.

My dad always said he was a dog person, and that cats were only good in the barn.
Until the fall day a little kitten stumbled onto the property after being driven out into the boonies and abandoned by some asshole. After feeding him a few days, my parents brought him in since it was getting colder and "we'll bring him to the shelter".

A lot of the time, people who don't want pets do love the animal in question. It's the responsibility of looking after a pet that they're not keen on. Not to mention the inevitable grief when they pass away.
5
u/DumbStuffOnStage 12d ago
this is how dads roll, he probably didn't want you either, but, well, here we are.

u/chaotic_gust97 12d ago
A lot of people I know of hate them because their shit smells bad.
First of all no. Second all shit smells bad but it's not as bad as you think. Also they're potty trained since birth as long as they see a box with sand, or maybe toy with the clean sand first so they understand it's a shitter. The only con that I know of is that everything is a scratchboard, and of course if you're allergic

Pretty much everybody I know who claimed to hate cats immediately fell in love with them once they became more familiar with them. Cats are magical creatures.
My dad used to be the same. When other people were around he used to act cool and distant when interacting with our cats but when he thought nobody could hear him he would cuddle them and talk to them just like everybody else did. It took a while for him to drop the facade, and now he just admits he's crazy about cats.

A friend LOVED cats, but her fiancé refused said he hated them. So for her bridal shower I got her a gift certificate to the Humane Society for a pet of her choosing. She was SO excited that the next morning she got a kitten and all the supplies needed. She named it Cupcake.
Fast forward a year later. Her father lived about 90 miles away. They visited about once a month. Her husband refused to go, unless HE could take HIS cat, Cupcake, with them. Cupcake rode on his shoulder in the car and laid on his lap every time he sat down.

That was my dad all the way when I was a kid....he said never. We got one when I was 10 and within a week we would catch him petting him but pretending not to. It was a siamese mix and barfed all the time so he called him Barf. They were best friends. Helped him through his cancer by always wanting to lay with him. My dad died in May of 1996 and a week later, Barf died as well from FIV.

Most Dads don't want pets because they always have to deal with the traumatic end of life procedures and care that inevitably come. It doesn't really have anything to do with them disliking animals.
2
u/Ohnoherewego13 12d ago
"I've never been a fan of cats." - famously said by my dad before he adopted my cat back in '03. Sadly before I had a camera with a phone, but that cat slept on his legs just about every night.

Was always a dog person growing up. Had a dog in the family most of my life. But recently got 2 cats and man do I love em a lot. One Bengal and one ragdoll. So freakin cute

u/hailsbeans 12d ago
My husband said he didn't want to take in my dad's cat, or to take in the senior kitty void that needed a loving home, or the teeny tiny little kitten fluff that was dumped in my sister's garden with three other tiny kittens, (they were taken in by various family members), but they all adore him. The older cat used to lie on my lap the most often, but did cuddle up with my husband, but the other two absolutely adore him. Lie all over him, head bumps, seek him out and he started out with, 'i don't like cats,' despite never having had any other pet than a guinea pig when he was in his early 20s. So now, guess who loves cats? I grew up with all the pets lol, so I already loved cats, though I had more experience with dogs. Best decision (obviously alongside my wedding) that I ever made and stood my ground on. 😁

My family had a similar experience. My father was on a business trip at the time and my family already had two cats (they were a bonded pair). My mother took my sisters and I to Petco and we say an adorable grey tuxedo kitten up for adoption. My mom's heart melted and we snatched him up faster than a spoiled kid in a candy store. My mother sent my father a family photo, including the kitten. My dad said, "Put him back, we don't need another cat." What he didn't know was that it was already a done deal. When my father got home from his trip, the kitten knew who he had to convince to stay with us. My father let us keep the kitten, on the condition that we name him Ramses, after the mascot of our favorite college sports team (go Tar Heels!). Ramses and my father have been best buds ever since. Also, we now have seven cats.

u/Doctor_Drai 12d ago
My Dad has never been a cat guy. But he'll always melt for an affectionate animal. The only issue with cats is that we have some allergies in our family. I'm not allergic, and my brothers not allergic, so we have cats, but my mom is and so is my sister, and my sister also has all the grandchildren. I think in different circumstances, my dad would fall in love with a cat. But it is what it is.

Got our last cat at the shelter. We were sitting in the area around the cages, having checked most of the other cats when my wife opens an orange tabby cage. Cat walks out, beelines to my lap and curls up purring. Choice made!
2
u/No_Solid_3737 12d ago
It's the responsibility of having to look after a cat. You gotta keep it fed, clean and entertained. The last part is crucial because a bored cat is dangerous, you can basically say goodbye to all your good furniture.
Not the mention cats have got the worse pee smell of any animal I know, dogs don't even come close. Nothing will remove the smell of a cat pee stain. So if a cat pees on your sofa, you'll have a cat pee smelling sofa for the rest of your life until you change it.
I love finding cats in the streets and petting them, but I don't think I'll ever have one as a pet, unless I ever purchase a big house with a large backyard in which case the cat will stay always in the backyard.
2
u/Contentpolicesuck 12d ago
I don't want a cat, we have two cats, I'm not going to be mean to them just because no one would listen to me.
2
u/JustHereForMiatas 12d ago
I'm gonna be devil's advocate here: dads saying "I don't want a cat" isn't about these tender moments where the cat is being nice and laying with him.
Dad saying "I don't want a cat" usually comes from dad knowing the responsibilities of owning a cat, which many people trivialize. Cats are easy pets until the moment they aren't. They can have a myriad of behavior or health issues that are difficult, sometimes impossible to fix. Dads who have been in cat households are weighing these pros and cons, and probably see the added responsibility as not being worth it.
That doesn't mean they're saying those nice moments don't exist, or that they're not going to take advantage of them if a cat is introduced into their lives. They just don't want the wildcard of an animal that may start ripping up expensive furniture, need constant medical attention, start peeing outside of its box because some unknown variable in its environment changed, etc.
2
u/BeingJoeBu 12d ago
Why are cats like this? I like cats, but I'm allergic so I want a little space and I really don't want them on my shirt, so I'm not weeping and fidgeting all day. I just want a little distance, and it must smell like steak to them, because not even feral cats will leave me alone.

Look, I don't particularly like the kids' cats in the house, and I definitely don't like my wife's small dog, but I'm not a raging asshole and definitely don't think it's the animals' fault so I don't take it out on them. Shockingly, being a chill person who doesn't demand their attention sometimes and ignore them the rest of the time makes me both the cats' and dog's favorite person. It also helps that I'm the responsible person who makes sure food is out and water bowls get filled.
I might be the oddball, but I think most dads are probably similar.
