99% of people who don't like cats have never gotten to know a cat. Gosh, I love seeing a happy, comfortable kittie.

u/Neat-Cold-7235 12d ago

Ppl seem to think cats have no emotion and are distant or something and convince others of those ideas it’s sooo annoying

429

u/ChangsManagement 12d ago

My cat wont leave me alone sometimes. He just wants to purr, headbutt me, and get kisses. People who think cats arent companion animals have def never had one lick their face clean and then stare in their eyes with love and pride lol

u/alfred-the-greatest 12d ago

My old cat used to come in from the outside while the family watched TV in the evening. She would come round every family member to give them a kiss on the nose, before curling up with my mum.

Wow; cats have really stepped up their online PR 🤣

25

u/SuperPoodie92477 12d ago

My Kate always kisses me right smack in the middle of my forehead. 😻

82

u/_Mooseli_ 12d ago

My cat is incredibly needy. He will flop and make air biscuits meowing at me with the most crunchy meow ever. He is the reason I got distracted and locked myself out of my apartment with out my keys lol

58

u/firstwefuckthelawyer 12d ago

crunchy meow

oh man that's my new name for it. My cat legit gags tryina meow and purr at the same time.

sometimes he just forgets how to purr so he just stares at ya breathin' heavy, drooling lol

21

u/lamorak2000 12d ago

Is he a ginger, by any chance?

36

u/firstwefuckthelawyer 12d ago

Oh yeah. So derpy that I actually looked it up and found out it's a thing.

He got lost for like three weeks. I had basically given up, but I'd still go out every other day or so and call for him, because I could swear I heard him meowing.

I was. He was lost... 100 yards away. He'd sadly meow when I called him, until he saw me, then he'd run away.... and this went on for two days before I just jumped on him and dealt with the scratches.

26

u/Less_Tumbleweed_3217 12d ago

Sounds like my cat when she got out: we knew she came around the house at night because we saw her on the doorbell cam and heard her crying. But when I opened the door for her, she ran away. We finally just left the door open and let her walk in on her own. :|

18

u/firstwefuckthelawyer 12d ago

I tried that and got the neighbor's dog twice, lol!

5

u/Less_Tumbleweed_3217 11d ago

Haha, yeah, my husband slept downstairs on the couch to monitor for any unwelcome guests.

Mine bothers me until I go to bed where he'll get into my arms to cuddle with me.

If I don't comply he'll yowl until I do.

He also loves playing fetch with a hair tie. Can go for up to fifteen minutes before he gets tired of it. He'll grab the hair tie from my hair if I'm too busy working to play with him.

18

u/DerpUrself69 12d ago

One of my cats requires me to make her a little nest out of her favorite fuzzy blanket right between my knees. Then she'll curl up and sleep on top of me without hardly moving a whisker until I get up in the morning. She's been doing that since, like the 2nd night after I adopted her. She's the sweetest little fuzz butt in the world.

5

u/Accurate_Praline 12d ago

Then she'll curl up and sleep on top of me without hardly moving a whisker until I get up in the morning.

That sounds lovely except for when you move a lot in your sleep. I can't fall asleep if I can't turn a bit and I also sleepwalk occasionally. I've filmed myself grabbing a cat who was just sleeping on my bed and depositing her outside the room. I then go back to bed and within five minutes get up again to let her in again (she wasn't making any sounds).

Same with our two cats. One of them especially is obessed with my husband. He can never be alone, and she needs to be as close as possible. She’s basically glued to him

4

u/spaceraverdk 12d ago

Velcro cat. I have a void that does this.

4

u/adhesivepants 12d ago

I have four. And three of them will all come and lay on me the moment I leave my door open. The fourth one will also come lay with me but only if she's the only one.

9

u/innocently_cold 12d ago

Or come lay on their chest, nose to nose, purr then fall asleep. Even if I have to pee really bad, I hold out for as long as I can! Must Not Disturb cute fluff.

Cats teach people about consent. The people who usually don't like cats are the ones who ignore boundaries and don't care about the cat's comfort :(

ETA: unless the cat is truly aggressive or an anxious fighter instead of flighter (rare stuff, but it happens), they wouldn't really seriously hurt you unless you ignored all their warning signs. Hissing, warning smacks, growling, more warning smacks. I've fostered many anxious cats and they truly do give a lot of warnings.

Only time I've been scratched is if the cat lost balance and I'm the closest thing they could grab onto.... Ouch

On the other note, my brother was 'randomly' attacked by a cat out on a walk with its owner. I didn't see it happen, but it could be possible that the cat isn't comfortable with walks and the guy was going the wrong way about it (instead of slowly introducing, he decides to just YEET it to max level) Therefore being scared shitless and attacking my brother when he was walking near it. But who knows...

22

u/Think-Description602 12d ago

Well, until they roll over and play pretend consent XD.

37

u/PM_ME_UR_AUDI_TTs 12d ago

That's a lesson that consent can be withdrawn at any time :)

5

u/SkgKyle 12d ago

My current cats absolutely love their stomach being rubbed, my other cats I've had in the past.. not so much lol. My one cat Mozzie I can roll onto his back and rub his tummy and he'll stretch right out purring

6

u/xSTSxZerglingOne 12d ago

My cat loves having his tummy rubbed, but it gets too intense for him really quick. Almost like it tickles. He resorts then, to the absolute softest bear trap. It's like a padded bear trap with a clawless, velvety disembowelment.

It's the people who haven't grown up with a cat that feel that way.

Of course cats are warry and standoff of strangers. So your not going to just meet one at a friend's house and it have the same level of effection

Mine like to greet me, they come trotting up, go "prrp!" and then rub their head against my knee. No emotion my ass

11

Mine do this too! Trot to the door to greet us, lots of headbutts and couch snuggles.

They just have boundaries and expect bodily autonomy. I read recently on Reddit ‘People that hate cats can’t love something they don’t control’.

Outside of a person having a history of trauma with cats, I agree with this.

6

u/lamorak2000 12d ago

Outside of a person having a history of trauma with cats,

And not always even then! My wife was shredded pretty good by a cat who was never taught not to use claws in play. She still adores the little beasts as much as I do.

29

u/theanih 12d ago

For me though it's the opposite. I refrained myself from getting a cat because I know how loving they can be and how much I will love them. I'm not sure if I'm able to handle parting with them when they die, because chances are they will die before me. Long story short I have 2 cats now. Let's hope they're a new breed of cats that can live for 100 years.

15

u/lamorak2000 12d ago

I'm not sure if I'm able to handle parting with them when they die,

Not gonna lie, it's hard. My solution is to have different ages of cats as pets, so when one passes I have a younger five to comfort me until I can function again.

8

u/PJKPJT7915 12d ago

I look at my cats and firmly tell them "don't ever die".

6

u/Less_Tumbleweed_3217 12d ago

My husband had never had a cat before and said we could get one but that she would be "my cat". Fast forward six years and now hubby absolutely loves OUR cat and tells me she will never die.

9

u/Doctor_Drai 12d ago

Cats are just more subtle dogs, so when the whole cat vs dog debate comes up people who know little about cats or both can easily settle on the one that's a little more extroverted.

A stressed out dog, barks and runs around, a stressed out cat runs away and hides; A dog that needs attention will jump up and lick your face, a cat that needs attention might meow, or rub your leg, or push shit off a ledge. They're usually quieter, typically more independent (though that can vary), and a little more varied in their modes.

I can train my cats to come when their name is called, and to sit before they get a treat, that's all fine and well. But when it comes time for play they have to wanna play, and even if they wanna, the 2 I have play in different ways, my orange tabby loves laser pointers, meanwhile my long haired tuxedo loves to play fetch. My orange tabby is very cuddly in mornings and late evenings, but my black tuxedo needs periodic affection throughout the day, so you best be ready to get suckled first thing when you get home from work. With dogs, I find the key to success is that you need to burn their energy in positive ways - take them for walks, take them to the dog park, play fetch, keep them active enough so they aren't being a nuisance or destructive. With house cats, they can burn their energy inside the house without being destructive as long as you give them the resources and attention they need.

At the end of the day, all pets need love and affection, and some people just shouldn't have pets period. But depending on the type of owner you are (outdoorsy vs homebody) one might suit you a little better.

6

u/ExtremeDog1295 12d ago

Some do - cats have wildly different personalities and you CAN get one that is aloof or unaffectionate.

3

u/CofferCrypto 12d ago

It’s people who have never had an antisocial or asshole cat that think it’s not possible.

Literally me 4 years ago, now i have 2 cats (and 2 dogs)

26

u/GeneralChaunce 12d ago

I've never owned a cat, and I've ALWAYS been a dog person, but for some strange reason, every single time I go to a friend's house (all cat people) their cat snuggles up on my lap and won't leave! I mean...I like the attention, especially because most of these cats are so temperamental that they come with a warning, but I never ask for them to come near me. Maybe that's the trick? Play hard to get in order to win over the tough ones. Yeah...I should buy a cat.

30

u/asietsocom 12d ago

Cats love people who don't like cats. That's such a classic move.

I recommend visiting your local shelter and see if you connect with one of them. Usually, it's best to adopt two cats together but there are exceptions, some cats prefer to be an only cat. But that's best to talk to the shelter about.

4

u/GeneralChaunce 12d ago

My only real problem at this point is that my wife is very allergic to cats, so finding one in a shelter that's hypoallergenic is going to be tough, especially if I need two...good advice, though! Thanks!

4

u/asietsocom 12d ago

Yeah that's hard. If you are serious about it, make a separate post because I know there lots of different things you could try. I only know there is one food that might help since you're not actually allergic to the cat, but allergic to something in their saliva. But I'm not super sure because thank god I'm only allergic to some random items of food.

But it see people in the comments of various cat subs talking about it all the time. There are definitely lots of cat owners who are allergic themselves and could give more advice.

19

u/Poette-Iva 12d ago edited 12d ago

In cat language, ignoring a cat is considered very safe and polite. If a cat is staring at another cat, they get the hint they're being watched and keep their distance. If you're looking away, back turned, that means you trust them, and they know they can approach.

11

u/firstwefuckthelawyer 12d ago

Oh man, I love playing the game with my cat, though. Jump up quick, stare wide-eyed at him until he's like waitwhatfuckwhatidowhyyoumeanmugginme and then chase him all over the house.

Then about five minutes later, he comes out of nowhere flying at my face. Round over.

EDIT: He likes it enough that he comes and begs for it!

My Dad: "If you get a cat, you're going to look back on it as a mistake you'll regret."

Cut to him years later, asking when's the next time he can cat sit, sending me selfies of her licking his face, telling me how cute it is when she purrs.

"I don't like cats, we're not getting one." Famous last words before getting a cat

Famous words the humans say:

I DON’T LIKE CATS! No How ~ NO WAY!!

’I’ll NEVER have one as a PET!

NO CAT FOR ME! I’ll NEVER GET!!

we feel their pain, these ones ‘so sure’

(we know that We’re their Only cure)

it starts with just a little glance,

(we know they watch, n that’s our chance…)

a distance kept, our target found,

we mew n s t r e t c h, n circle ‘round . . .

their glance turns into longer stare,

it’s time to climb upon their chair

perhaps the back - a shoulder tap,

some time may pass,

n then

the lap…

a gentle biscuit on their legs

(they’re getting soft… their heart it Begs)

a quiet purrrrrr they’ve never felt -

that’s when their heart

begins to melt

you have a Cat, n it is Me ;}

n now

my Human

You will be

♥️

When I went to the shelter to adopt our kittens, he was a bit skeptical about two cats (we previously had only one who aged and passed away). He actually wanted a dog if he had every choice in the world (but knew that’s not feasible), and he said he’d prefer a male cat and not a black cat.

13

u/Kaiya_Mya 12d ago edited 12d ago

It's because, ironically, they end up acting in a way that make them more appealing to the cat. Most people who don't like cats end up giving them a wide berth, avoiding their gaze and leaving them alone, which actually means they're inadvertently respecting the cat's space and allowing them to make the first move.

By trying to keep their distance, they're actually speaking the cat's language.

A lot of the time, people who don't want pets do love the animal in question. It's the responsibility of looking after a pet that they're not keen on. Not to mention the inevitable grief when they pass away.

A lot of people I know of hate them because their shit smells bad.

First of all no. Second all shit smells bad but it's not as bad as you think. Also they're potty trained since birth as long as they see a box with sand, or maybe toy with the clean sand first so they understand it's a shitter. The only con that I know of is that everything is a scratchboard, and of course if you're allergic

Pretty much everybody I know who claimed to hate cats immediately fell in love with them once they became more familiar with them. Cats are magical creatures.

My dad used to be the same. When other people were around he used to act cool and distant when interacting with our cats but when he thought nobody could hear him he would cuddle them and talk to them just like everybody else did. It took a while for him to drop the facade, and now he just admits he's crazy about cats.

3

It took twelve years for my wife to talk me into a cat. It took twelve minutes for the cat to wrap me around her little paw.

nothing like people who don't like cats changing their minds when they get a cat :8097:

3

u/fluffyflugel 12d ago

The cat on the other hand: I like humans, I am getting a human. You’re my new human, dad!

3

u/Lukemeister38 12d ago

I've noticed that all of my friends growing up who "didn't like cats" simply never owned one and picked up that notion from their parents. Most of them own cats now...

3

u/Erthgoddss 12d ago

A friend LOVED cats, but her fiancé refused said he hated them. So for her bridal shower I got her a gift certificate to the Humane Society for a pet of her choosing. She was SO excited that the next morning she got a kitten and all the supplies needed. She named it Cupcake.

Fast forward a year later. Her father lived about 90 miles away. They visited about once a month. Her husband refused to go, unless HE could take HIS cat, Cupcake, with them. Cupcake rode on his shoulder in the car and laid on his lap every time he sat down.

Cats always seem to know the ones who don’t want them the most and they always seem to love them the most 🤣

This is adorable!!!

2

u/KeshaCow 12d ago

My dad has that same exact shirt but in long sleeve. Is that a dad thing? Do your dads also wear that?

2

u/religionisadisease 12d ago

My pops- a stoic and unemotional German man said the same thing. Then Otto came along. Otto even got into his aviary and killed all his birds, but they stayed inseparable til Otto’s passing.

2

u/Once__inawhile 12d ago

Super sweet!

2

u/QualityEvening3466 12d ago

A tale as old as time.

2

u/rpgmomma8404 12d ago

My dad doesn't care for animals in general but when I moved he said he missed my cats. 😂

2

u/modular50 12d ago

That was my dad all the way when I was a kid....he said never. We got one when I was 10 and within a week we would catch him petting him but pretending not to. It was a siamese mix and barfed all the time so he called him Barf. They were best friends. Helped him through his cancer by always wanting to lay with him. My dad died in May of 1996 and a week later, Barf died as well from FIV.

2

u/Resident_Somewhere38 12d ago

That is one comfy, chilled cat! 🥰

2

u/Available_Ad9766 12d ago

You don’t “get a cat”… A cat gets you….

2

u/AloysBane 12d ago

Men secretly have a soft spot for cozy sleeping animals…doesn’t mean I want to own one

u/jeanneTgroce Persian (traditional) 12d ago

I was scared of them until I have one who became my life.

2

u/enilix 12d ago

A typical cat with a typical dad.

Super cute.

2

u/Beneficial-Sugar6950 12d ago

I feel like this happens 99.99% of the time someone says “I don’t want a pet” then they’re the ones who love them the most

2

u/K-Dog7469 12d ago

People can say that, and cats can say otherwise. And they usually do.

2

u/thegolfernick 12d ago

I hated cats because my dad hated cats. Now I love my two cats

2

u/crunchypuddle 12d ago

Most Dads don't want pets because they always have to deal with the traumatic end of life procedures and care that inevitably come. It doesn't really have anything to do with them disliking animals.

2

u/Ohnoherewego13 12d ago

"I've never been a fan of cats." - famously said by my dad before he adopted my cat back in '03. Sadly before I had a camera with a phone, but that cat slept on his legs just about every night.

2

u/Giant_Eagle_Airlines 12d ago

Your dad is a cat?

2

u/midnightsnacks 12d ago

Was always a dog person growing up. Had a dog in the family most of my life. But recently got 2 cats and man do I love em a lot. One Bengal and one ragdoll. So freakin cute

2

u/hailsbeans 12d ago

My husband said he didn't want to take in my dad's cat, or to take in the senior kitty void that needed a loving home, or the teeny tiny little kitten fluff that was dumped in my sister's garden with three other tiny kittens, (they were taken in by various family members), but they all adore him. The older cat used to lie on my lap the most often, but did cuddle up with my husband, but the other two absolutely adore him. Lie all over him, head bumps, seek him out and he started out with, 'i don't like cats,' despite never having had any other pet than a guinea pig when he was in his early 20s. So now, guess who loves cats? I grew up with all the pets lol, so I already loved cats, though I had more experience with dogs. Best decision (obviously alongside my wedding) that I ever made and stood my ground on. 😁

2

u/RedheadFromOutrSpace 12d ago

Cat: Oh, you didn’t want a cat? You are my FAVORITE person.

2

u/Flowerandcatsgirl 12d ago

It’s the close up for me! Absolutely adorable!❤️❤️❤️

2

u/Pella1968 12d ago

Your dad and the cat he "didn't want is precious"

2

u/Hara-Kiri 12d ago

That was me before a cat wandered into my home and decided it was getting me. Now I can't walk by him without giving him some love.

2

u/guinnypig 12d ago

If the cats I found as a kid did this to my dad, he would've kept them in a heartbeat.

Alas, I didn't find nice cats until I was grown. It's very effective on my husband!

2

u/klako8196 12d ago

The cat always chooses the person who didn't want the cat.

2

u/asrieldreemurr2232 12d ago

My family had a similar experience. My father was on a business trip at the time and my family already had two cats (they were a bonded pair). My mother took my sisters and I to Petco and we say an adorable grey tuxedo kitten up for adoption. My mom's heart melted and we snatched him up faster than a spoiled kid in a candy store. My mother sent my father a family photo, including the kitten. My dad said, "Put him back, we don't need another cat." What he didn't know was that it was already a done deal. When my father got home from his trip, the kitten knew who he had to convince to stay with us. My father let us keep the kitten, on the condition that we name him Ramses, after the mascot of our favorite college sports team (go Tar Heels!). Ramses and my father have been best buds ever since. Also, we now have seven cats.

2

u/Subject-Kangaroo-397 12d ago

Lol my bf is the same way thwn we brought home 2 kittens and now he wont let one of them leave lol

2

u/Doctor_Drai 12d ago

My Dad has never been a cat guy. But he'll always melt for an affectionate animal. The only issue with cats is that we have some allergies in our family. I'm not allergic, and my brothers not allergic, so we have cats, but my mom is and so is my sister, and my sister also has all the grandchildren. I think in different circumstances, my dad would fall in love with a cat. But it is what it is.

2

u/tryagainx3 12d ago

Owned by a cat.

2

u/macfound32 12d ago

Got our last cat at the shelter. We were sitting in the area around the cages, having checked most of the other cats when my wife opens an orange tabby cage. Cat walks out, beelines to my lap and curls up purring. Choice made!

2

u/No_Solid_3737 12d ago

It's the responsibility of having to look after a cat. You gotta keep it fed, clean and entertained. The last part is crucial because a bored cat is dangerous, you can basically say goodbye to all your good furniture.

Not the mention cats have got the worse pee smell of any animal I know, dogs don't even come close. Nothing will remove the smell of a cat pee stain. So if a cat pees on your sofa, you'll have a cat pee smelling sofa for the rest of your life until you change it.

I love finding cats in the streets and petting them, but I don't think I'll ever have one as a pet, unless I ever purchase a big house with a large backyard in which case the cat will stay always in the backyard.

2

u/Contentpolicesuck 12d ago

I don't want a cat, we have two cats, I'm not going to be mean to them just because no one would listen to me.

2

u/JustHereForMiatas 12d ago

I'm gonna be devil's advocate here: dads saying "I don't want a cat" isn't about these tender moments where the cat is being nice and laying with him.

Dad saying "I don't want a cat" usually comes from dad knowing the responsibilities of owning a cat, which many people trivialize. Cats are easy pets until the moment they aren't. They can have a myriad of behavior or health issues that are difficult, sometimes impossible to fix. Dads who have been in cat households are weighing these pros and cons, and probably see the added responsibility as not being worth it.

That doesn't mean they're saying those nice moments don't exist, or that they're not going to take advantage of them if a cat is introduced into their lives. They just don't want the wildcard of an animal that may start ripping up expensive furniture, need constant medical attention, start peeing outside of its box because some unknown variable in its environment changed, etc.

2

u/BeingJoeBu 12d ago

Why are cats like this? I like cats, but I'm allergic so I want a little space and I really don't want them on my shirt, so I'm not weeping and fidgeting all day. I just want a little distance, and it must smell like steak to them, because not even feral cats will leave me alone.

The Cat Distribution Network™ heard your Dad's call.

2

u/Bobmanbob1 12d ago

This was me before Bob came into my life. Hated cats, now, I can't imagine life without him.

2

u/guesswhat8 12d ago

I mean whoever says they don’t like cats if a cat does this must be a psychopath.

2

u/WhiteCat10 12d ago

Cats are my soul animal. I can be standoffish but if I like you, I'm fine!

2

u/AngoraVan 12d ago

Kitty is zonked. Your dad makes a nice warm pillow.

2

u/Think-Description602 12d ago

Their love is genuine, and the only condition after they put trust in you, that you be you.

Hard to fight that.

2

u/OldGodsProphet 12d ago

Why is that breed so cuddly compared to other cats?

2

u/Crematorman 12d ago

Mine was the same. He’s now had cats for the past 37 years 🤣

2

u/aladaze 12d ago

Look, I don't particularly like the kids' cats in the house, and I definitely don't like my wife's small dog, but I'm not a raging asshole and definitely don't think it's the animals' fault so I don't take it out on them. Shockingly, being a chill person who doesn't demand their attention sometimes and ignore them the rest of the time makes me both the cats' and dog's favorite person. It also helps that I'm the responsible person who makes sure food is out and water bowls get filled.

I might be the oddball, but I think most dads are probably similar.

u/COPTERDOC 12d ago

Kitty is listening to the turd being created.
